We all know about how the bomb was dropped and everything in its path was destroyed. Nothing survived. It did not discriminate between the innocent and the guilty, the Japanese and the other nationalities there, Temples and the Catholic Churches, between love and hate.
At least that is what I had been taught at public school. I was not Catholic growing up, so I do not know what was taught in Catholic schools, but today I learned that there were a few survivors. And not just of the bombings, but a few people that survived the radiation effects and lived for over 30 years after the bombings. Today I learned that during that during those two terrible events, there was not just one but there were two miracles, one in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki.
Two communities survived. One in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki. Both were communities of Jesuits that prayed the Rosary daily and followed the message of Our Lady of Fatima, whom they believe protected them from the devastation of the bombs. Not only did these Jesuits survive the blast, but all effects of radiation poisoning that they were told would kill them within weeks, if not days. The buildings that they were in also survived with little damage, when everything around them was completely destroyed.
There is a short YouTube video where one of the survivors discusses the incident:
There is also an article from the Catholic Herald from the United Kingdom from 2010 that tells about the miracles. It explains that in Hiroshima, in a mile radius from the detonation of the bomb, everything was incinerated except the Jesuit community that was only a few blocks away.
There is a picture in another article by the Shrine of Saint Jude, about one third of the way down (there is a quick link that takes you straight to it in blue called "Jesuit Church dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption"), that shows the devastation of Hiroshima, showing the shell of the Catholic Church and the house up the road where they lived. Next to the Church you can see black cassocked men where virtually everything around them is flattened.
The Fatima Prayer:
Most Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit I adore Thee profoundly.
I offer Thee the most precious Body, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences whereby He is offended.
And through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
